Dear Friends,
In a departure from our concert presentations, Olde'n'New is proud to present David Butler, the award winning actor, in his highly acclaimed one-man play...
A THE TEACHER IN THE BUSHVELD
...fresh from a triumphal run at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival.
After the enormous success of his one man show 'A Touch of Madness', David Butler has teamed up again with writer / director Nicky Rebelo in a new show 'A Teacher in the Bushveld'. Continuing their exploration about the life of Herman Charles Bosman, 'A Teacher in the Bushveld' deals with the short period Bosman spent in the Groot Marico as a school teacher, and from which his best-loved and well-know characters emerged. The play presents Bosman in a context which has never been seen before and presents characters seen on the stage for the first time.
'A Teacher in the Bushveld' explores Bosman's own encounters with the people he met in the Groot Marico, sometimes with hilarious consequences.
Take a journey to the Bushveld with Herman Charles Bosman and meet Ouma Engelbrecht, Henri la Valois -bushveld actor, Hendrik Prinsloo who didn't mean to stop at the Groot Marico but did, and listen to what Oupa Bekker has to say about white ants, and of course the poor school teacher. Literary giant Herman Charles Bosman's work remains as fresh and astute as when he first wrote the stories.
'A Teacher in the Bushveld' premiered at the 2009 National Arts Festival and was one of the hits on the Fringe. Butler repeated his success at this year's festival, where once again the show played to full houses.
"DAVID BUTLER TAKES ON BOSMAN AND TRIUMPHS" Cue Festival Newspaper
"Butler has become the reincarnation of Bosman and a champion of his stories...
A strong performance that makes the words dance as joyously as they do - "
Diane de Beer, Star Tonight, 2009
'A Teacher in the Bushveld' has also played to great acclaim at the KALFIEFEES and the Bosman Literary Weekend at the Groot Marico.
